Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like typical biological terror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving one another.

An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While walking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, interspersing bits of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and delivers them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his support system. He fears the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that come with most partnerships after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
